The County Tyrone village of Aughnacloy, situated 12 miles south west of Dungannon, lies close to the County Monaghan border. On Monday 10th April 1843 George Ensor and William Cranston organised a steeplechase meeting on a course about a mile from the village, over grass land and good sporting fences. The card opened with the Auchnacloy Challenge Cup which was gifted to Mr Brydge’s Eggflip by a walk over. The main 2 mile Sweepstake saw Mr White’s Whitelegs get the better of Zealot, although entries for each of the races were disappointing. It is therefore not surprising that there are no records of any further steeplechase meetings being staged in the village. |
